4. INT. BEER HALL - OWNER’S OFFICE – NIGHT
FRANKIE and HYMIE enter the office of the bar owner, T. C. LEDBETTER, to collect their fee for the evening’s entertainment.
FRANKIE
Hey, we did all right out there.
The owner gives Frankie a small wad of bills.
FRANKIE (CONT’D)
What’s this?
LEDBETTER
I’m sorry boys, I had some heavy expenses
HYMIE
You’re going to have some heavy trouble unless you come up with the rest of the scratch you owe us, mister.
LEDBETTER
There ain’t gonna be no trouble. You see the sheriff happens to be my partner. You got a little egg on your face, just don’t stand around and let it drip into your shoes. Now beat it!
FRANKIE
You fat honey-dripper. Come up with the rest of our money or I’ll strip the lard off your ugly . . .
Ledbetter pulls a switch-blade knife, and slowly approaches Frankie. Hymie backs up against a wall.
LEDBETTER
(taunting Frankie with the knife)
Pretty, pretty, pretty.
HYMIE
Stop! Don’t!
Frankie picks up a wastebasket to protect himself. He takes the offensive and advances toward Ledbetter, disarms him, and with two punches knocks him out. Frankie and Hymie search his pockets for money. They take only the amount they had contracted for and leave the rest. They hurriedly exit.
