50. INT. MEXICAN CANTINA – DAY
The cantina’s dance floor is filled with people. BARNEY is wildly swinging KAY around the floor; she is valiantly attempting to keep up. TRINA and FRANKIE are seated at a table with margaritas.
TRINA
(obviously tipsy)
You and Kay are just right for each other. Why, it’s like an “Alice in Wonderland” kind of thing. With you and her as the prince and princess.
FRANKIE
There wasn’t any prince and princess in “Alice in Wonderland.”
TRINA
There wasn’t any in my marriage to that stinko Barney either.
FRANKIE
Too bad.
TRINA
Oh, there’s always Chester Tumwater. Chester Tumwater, man of my dreams. And, you know, Barney doesn’t even know I know him.
FRANKIE
You’re a pretty busy girl.
TRINA
He has lots and lots of money stashed away in lots and lots of banks. And he is going to provide me with comfort and luxury in my declining years. Oh, oh, that Chester is an operator. Right now he’s operating on your girlfriend.
FRANKIE
Oh, you mean Barney?
TRINA
Everybody sees Barney, but I see Chester. You know I admire you.
FRANKIE
You admire me.
TRINA
You’re a movin’ picture star. That’s what I was gonna be. That’s why I married old Chester, I mean Barney.
Frankie gets up to rescue Kay on the dance floor. He taps Barney on the shoulder.
BARNEY
Hey Frankie, go ahead! Take it!
Barney returns to the table with Trina. Frankie and Kay begin to dance.
FRANKIE
It’s too hot in here.
KAY
And too crowded.
FRANKIE
And the music’s loud.
KAY
Too loud.
FRANKIE
I don’t like this music, anyhow.
KAY
And, ah, Barney might come back any minute. There’s one or two places where I’m not black and blue.
FRANKIE
And we haven’t been alone all day.
KAY
No we haven’t.
They make a hasty, but stealthy, retreat through a door out of the cantina.
