69. EXT. BARNEY’S CONVERTIBLE – NIGHT
BARNEY and FRANKIE are in Barney’s convertible on a secluded mountain road overlooking the city.
FRANKIE
When it hits I want it to hit big. Think you can do it?
BARNEY
Sure I can. I can get it on the front page of every major newspaper in the country within forty-eight hours.
FRANKIE
What happens when they ask who hired you?
BARNEY
Now, you know better than that. It’s built in the deal. I’m a private detective, it’s privileged communication. Look, if I reveal just the name of one client I’m out of business.
FRANKIE
There’s two thousand dollars in it for you.
BARNEY
A thousand now and a thousand after I do it. OK?
Frankie hands Barney an envelope.
FRANKIE
It’s all there, two thousand. Now we don’t have to see each other again.
Barney accepts the envelope and puts it into his coat pocket.
BARNEY
OK. Now you want it leaked just this way: that you were arrested for prostitution and procuring and jumped bail, you and this fella, Hymie Kelly, and a girl by the name of Laurel Scott. Right?
Frankie smiles his approval of Barney’s understanding and gets out of the car.
BARNEY (CONT’D)
Hey, Mr. Fane, you’re a pretty chilly item. I can’t figure you out.
FRANKIE
Yeah. How about that?
Frankie walks away as Barney looks after him.
